Sinopse: Adrian Monk era um dos melhores, senão o melhor detetive da polícia de São Francisco, e ficou muito conhecido por usar meios nada convencionais para solucionar os casos mais complicados do departamento. Contudo, após o trágico, e ainda não solucionado, assassinato da sua esposa, Monk ficou arrasado e se tornou um obsessivo-compulsivo. Isto fez com que ele desenvolvesse medo de praticamente tudo: germes, altura, multidões, e até leite. Sua condição psicológica lhe custou o emprego, e continua impondo grandes desafios no seu dia-a-dia.
Natalie Teeger substituiu Sharona Fleming como a assistente particular de Monk. Assim como Sharona, Natalie ajuda o detetive oferecendo assistência até mesmo quando as tarefas mais simples, como organizar gavetas e escolher roupas, se tornam uma agonia. Com o tempo, ela também se tornou uma espécie de “Dr.Watson” às avessas, ajudando Monk nas suas investigações.
Atualmente trabalhando como consultor particular, Monk continua a desvendar crimes com os métodos mais incomuns. Apesar de não ser mais membro da polícia, ele ainda é muito requisitado pelo seu antigo chefe, o Capitão Leland Stottlemeyer, para dar seu ponto de vista único em casos que deixam qualquer policial de cabelo em pé.
Stottlemeyer é um detetive muito condecorado, porém ele sabe que nunca será tão
bom quanto Adrian Monk, e isso o deixa fora de si. Já o Tenente Randall Disher aspira por um grande futuro no departamento e aproveita toda e qualquer oportunidade para massagear o ego do Capitão.
Monk é um detetive cheio de fobias e manias, entretanto ele não tem problemas para investigar caso algum, desde que não haja germes ou grandes alturas envolvidas. Seu maior desejo é voltar a fazer parte da polícia de São Francisco, mas será que algum dia ele terá condições de se reabilitar e voltar à ativa em tempo integral?
